Google – 1K Fulton

Google's 357,000 square feet stretch across seven floors inside the 10-story building, branded 1K Fulton.
At 1K Fulton, Google transformed a once-windowless cold storage facility into a dynamic, multi-level workplace designed for creativity, connection, and growth. Each floor offers a distinct experience—from open workspaces and collaborative lounges to tech-driven labs and quirky amenities. A rooftop deck features a repurposed CTA train car turned lounge, offering employees a unique spot to relax and recharge.

At the heart of the building is a six-story atrium that floods the interior with natural light and creates vertical connectivity across departments. A custom-designed, perforated feature wall was planned as the atrium’s visual centerpiece. But just three months before opening, the design was scrapped. Rather than compromise, the project team mobilized around-the-clock efforts to reimagine and install a new showpiece in time for launch.

Google officially opened its Midwest HQ in November 2015—complete with the redesigned feature wall. The project not only elevated their workplace but helped spark the transformation of Fulton Market into one of Chicago’s most desirable business and cultural districts.
