Fifth City Commons Named Affordable Housing Project of the Year by Illinois Real Estate Journal
Skender is proud to announce that Fifth City Commons has been recognized as the Affordable Housing Project of the Year by Illinois Real Estate Journal. The 43-unit, 60,000-square-foot affordable housing development in Chicago’s East Garfield Park was honored for its innovative design, sustainable construction and community impact.
Completed in late 2024, the all-electric, Passive House-designed complex offers high-quality housing for residents earning 30% to 80% of the area median income. The development was built on long-vacant land as part of the City of Chicago’s participation in the C40 Reinventing Cities initiative and now serves as a model for sustainable, community-focused development.
Skender served as general contractor alongside joint venture partner Ashlaur Construction, collaborating with Nia Architects, Perkins&Will, and a team of engineering, trades and community partners. The project exceeded diversity goals with 30% MBE and 10% WBE participation.
“This award is a testament to what’s possible when innovation, sustainability and community partnerships align,” said Brian Skender, Senior Project Manager and Team Leader at Skender. “We’re proud to have delivered our first Passive House project and to make a lasting impact in Garfield Park.”
