The LinkedIn Chicago Expansion built out floors 5 and 6 at 525 West Monroe Street, where LinkedIn Chicago was already occupying floors 1 through 4. As it was a complicated project that required several long-lead items, Skender, serving as general contractor, conducted early and detailed phase meetings to keep all project team members on track and working efficiently.

In order to connect the new expansion with the existing space, an existing connecting stair was extended from floor 4 up to floor 6. In order to keep the stair visually open and also fire rated, the stair was enclosed with fire-rated glass. Fire-rated glass requires a long lead time – up to 20 weeks – which required the Skender team to investigate opening requirements well before the start of the project and to pre-release the specialty glass order before the start of construction. Throughout construction, careful coordination occurred to ensure proper fit of the glass when it arrived.

The “track” on floor 6, an activated path that loops around the center of the plan, was created with poured concrete and applied graphics. Strict phasing was coordinated to ensure construction could continue apace while the central corridor of the floor was inaccessible due to “track” installation. Prior to installation of the walkway, the project team completed several mockups of flooring finishes to test durability and to ensure the highest level of quality for the client.

Anchoring the design of floor 5 visually is a 3-dimensional millwork feature that artistically represents a map of Chicago. This custom installation required early coordination with the millwork team to ensure a quality and timely installation.

This project is certified LEED Gold.
