2209 North Halsted
2209 N. Halsted is an 18,648-sf mixed-use development consisting of retail, apartments and below-grade parking in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood.
Excavating the parking level of this development required digging below the foundations of neighboring buildings. Traditional soil-retention and underpinning methods would have risked damage to these vintage structures. Skender Construction utilized jet grouting – one of the first times the technique had been used in Chicago residential construction. A mix of water, air and cement, injected at high pressure into holes bored beneath the neighboring buildings, strengthened the soil and kept the foundations intact throughout construction.
